Escape from Babylon: il nuovo album di Alborosie!!

Alborosie torna più ambizioso che mai con questo suo secondo CD, il primo frutto del sodalizio con l’etichetta inglese Greensleeves da tempo posseduta dall’americana VP. Se i clamorosi successi su singolo di ‘Herbalist’ e ‘Kingston Town’ davano l’idea dell’artista italiano che dopo lungo lavoro in Giamaica aveva trovato con le sue influenze e le sue esperienze una sintassi musicale adatta alla scena dancehall giamaicana e globale, la musica di questo ottimo ‘Escape from Babylon’ ci suggerisce invece Alborosie che porta alla ribalta un’idea di roots reggae dei vecchi tempi molto più in sintonia con la sensibilità degli appassionati europei e statunitensi che non con le ultime tendenze della scena giamaicana.

L’inizio è da brivido con la militanza sociale di ‘America’ dedicata al solito ruolo di ‘controllore mondiale’ del paese di Obama, mentre dopo la ‘ganja tune’ ‘No cocaine’ con reminiscenze rub-a-dub style esplode il grintoso rocksteady di ‘Mama she don’t like you’ in compagnia della bravissima I.Eye. ‘Global war’ è bellissima ed è un tributo all’influenza fondamentale dei Black Uhuru mentre ‘Money’ riattualizza inna Alborosie style l’omonimo classico roots di Horace Andy.

Procedendo nell’ascolto ‘I Rusalem’ è una emozionante citazione del miglior Alpha Blondy con Albo nel suo fluentissimo sing-jay style mentre ‘I can’t stand it’ è un duetto virtuale con il grande Dennis Brown: la tune originale del ‘Principe del reggae’ era compresa in ‘Love’s gotta hold on me’ del 1984. Nella parte centrale dell’album ‘Real story’ si avvicina molto a ‘Herbalist’ e ‘Kingston Town’, ‘Dung inna Babylon’ porta il profumo del roots ‘rurale’ di personaggi come Burning Spear o Culture e l’elogio alla figura femminile di ‘Good woman’ ha un incedere che porta alla mente l’ipnotico beat della Roots Radics.

Gramps di Morgan Heritage porta le sue vibes in ‘One sound’ su un giro armonico molto familiare alla poetica della famiglia da cui proviene, ‘Humbleness’ è una magnifica traccia roots sull’umiltà e la devozione a Rastafari e ‘Promised land’ è un roots in maggiore che splende come il sole.

Siamo al finale: ‘Mr. President’ è irresistibile con gli strali rivolti al nostro presidente del consiglio ed a Mussolini, ‘Operation Uppsala’ ci riporta dalle parti del roots più meditativo con un bell’arrangiamento di fiati ed in conclusione con ‘Likkle Africa’ il ritmo delle ‘nyabinghi drums’ incornicia una magnifica ballata sulla mistica naturale che pervade, tra mille contraddizioni e problemi, il paese del reggae. In questo volo radente lungo ‘Escape from Babylon’ abbiamo parlato di citazioni e stili che Alborosie padroneggia e sintetizza costruendo con grande feeling un ricco e personale vocabolario. Il 15 giugno sta arrivando: ancora pochi giorni di pazienza prima che sia disponibile questo ottimo disco che figurerà senz’altro molto bene nei sondaggi dei migliori lavori dell’anno.
